PopFree Records is starting a live recording series in partnership with Estia Cantina on Long Island. Estia Cantina is an upscale Mexican eatery with an adjoining jazz nightclub that is quickly building a reputation as one of the hottest jazz venues in the Northeast.
Many of the concerts will also be broadcast locally on PBS radio station WLIR, giving everyone in the area access to this great cultural community asset. Thanks in advance to WLIR and the sponsors who will be making this happen.
On Main Street in Amagansett, surrounded by the fashionable Hamptons, the club features an impressive roster of jazz musicians of national prominence. Visit the club, and you're likely to get a superb dinner along with a killer jazz set, an impressive wine list, and an astounding selection of exotic tequilas.
The first live recording, of the New Orleans Society Orchestra, was made Saturday, January 27, with a packed house of jazz fans in attendance.
The New Orleans Society Orchestra features Bob Greene playing stride piano. Bob, now in his eighties , is a veteran of many decades of New Orleans jazz, including a long stint with the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band. His knowledge of the jazz scene in America, the major players of the genre , and his experience as a player make him a living art treasure, and it is a privilege to hear him play.  Bob spends a lot of time touring Europe and Japan, where the appetite for this classic American music form is hearty indeed.
Bob was joined by Peter Martin Weiss on guitar, John Bucher on coronet, and Dennis Raffelock on string bass, and all gave inspired performances.
The material gathered is in post production as we speak, and we expect the first release to be available for distribution by April.
Stay tuned for a list of the full lineup for this season's series, and the next recording date!
